The Warded Man The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"For hundreds of years, demons have ruled the night. Now three young survivors will dare the impossible in a desperate quest to regain humanity's freedom" Cover Blurb

I heard a lot of buzz about this novel last year. A debut author who used his hour plus train commute to write a novel on his smart phone. I was really excited to get this ARC last july and it was the perfect choice to start my Fantasy Month reading:)

Four Major sections make up this book

TIBBET'S BROOK

MILN

KRASIA

CUTTERS HOLLOW

These are four major locations that make up the world of The Warded Man.

In the first section we are introduced to Arlen a young boy living in a rustic village. We see Arlen and his family reacting to a major attack on their village by demons aka corelings. Every night Demons of every size shape and element attack the human population their only desire to destroy property and devour human flesh.

The only protection against these monsters are Wards. Written Glyphs that repel demons as humans cower in their homes every night. Arlen is different from the others in his village he questions their days sent working the farms and nights cowering in fear. Like every great hero he experiences a tragedy that sends him from the small confines of Tibbet's Brook to the larger world. His destiny leads him to uncover hidden knowledge and cross paths with The wardered man a possible deliverer of human kind.

Next we are introduced to Leesha. She is the daughter of a prosperous buisnessman and an overbearing mother. She is betrothed and in Love. She feels secure in her future and her place in the world, until she stands up to a lie that will change the course of her life forever.

The third main character is Rojer a young assistant joungler, well respected entertainers. He experiences person tragedy as well but grows into a gifted entertainer and develops a startling musical skill.

These three characters are the heart of the first book in this series. They are not perfect. Their mistakes and pain are deep, but they all share the same need to defy the conventions of their homes, and choose to fight against the corelings. They share this passion with the mysterious Krasians, the only inhabitants of their world who actively fight the demons.

Peter V. Brett has a highly engaging writing style. He writes fast paced action scenes with a hint of horror. This book has a familiar fantsy feel to it but is not predictable. Peter has a firm grasp on the world he is building. He also explores some of the darker sides of human nature that are rarely addressed in fantasy novels. The book changes focus between the three main characters culminating in their meeting and ending with an epic battle. I look forward to future volumes in this series. The second book The Desert Spear is due this month. :)
