31 Days Day 17: Vampires! Review w/Giveaway: Blue Bloods

I have to admit after Twilight I started to feel a little vampire fatigue. I'd taken a long break from vampire fiction but these books have infused the genre with new blood and made me a huge fan of Vamp books all over again :

Half Vampire Cat Crawfield seeks vengeance on the undead. using sex appeal and her natural vampiring skills she has had a few kills under her belt. Then she meets sexy Vampire Bones and her world is turned upside down. For reasons of his own Bones also is destroying his own kind the two team up , but government interference forces Cat to make choices that may tear her and Bones apart for ever. I'm half way through this series and each book gets better and better.

J.K. Beck has an interesting take on the Vampire myth's. the Vampire  virus is actually a Demon that the bearer must fight to control. the first book is a great start to the series, action packed with great characters. The first book also has a wist ending that I didn't  see coming. I talked to J.K on twitter and she has at least 6 books planed in the series with different POV narrations. I can't wait!

Another interesting take on Vampires: Student Claire Danvers a college student in the small Texas time of Morganville has discovered the towns startling secret. It's run by vampires. Fleeing her campus housing due to viscous bullying she meets an eclectic group of roommates with secrets of their own. I've only read one book in the series so far but I hope to get The Dead Girl's Dance reviewed this month.

First in a series about Vampyre Joe Pitt. he tries to live on the fringe of New York Vampire society, events conspire to have him head a search for a missing rich girl and entanglements with the Coalition one of the most powerful Vampyre clan. Looking forward to reading this.

I won these two books from the lovely Book Chick City. I hadn't heard of the series before and I really enjoyed the first book. Below is my review and your chance to win a copy of the book (slightly loved):

Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods Series #1)Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, it carried on board the men and women who would shape America: Miles Standish; John Alden; Constance Hopkins. But some among the Pilgrims were not pure of heart; they were not escaping religious persecution. Indeed, they were not even human. They were vampires. The vampires assimilated quickly into the New World. Rising to levels of enormous power, wealth, and influence, they were the celebrated blue bloods of American society. Good Reads

I have to admit I have a little Vampire Fatigue. As a Genre vampire books have flooded the market, and I have gorged myself on them! Lately though I've backed off from the Genre. Blue Bloods however is a new take on Vampires that I really enjoyed.

Schuyler Van Alen has a family name rich in history albeit not in financial assets. She attends the exclusive Duchesne School. With her goth like clothes and shy nature Schuyler doesn't fit in well and except for her two best friend Oliver and Dylan she is own her own.

Attending a party hosted by the Duchesne elite Jack and Mimi Force Schuyler makes a connection with Jack. A murdered student shocks the Academy and starts to reveal secrets about the school and Schuyler herself.

What I enjoyed most about this book is the unique take on Vampires. In de la Cruz's universe vampires live for at least 100 years. After they "die" their blood is taken and injected into an embryo. These children are born not knowing their legacy until they start to develop strange symbols on their body at 15. These symbols represent their heritage and their powers.

Schuyler is unique in the fact that one of her parents is human. She also has a rare gift to be able to have people follow her orders through mind control. In between these chapters we also get glimpses of Catherine Carver's diary, a settler of Plymouth. The mystery of the past is very important to Schuyler's present, the mysterious Silver Bloods are back and there prey? Vampires. Especially the Blue Bloods.

Melissa has a firm grasp on this world she has created. Her teen characters come across very genuinely. Most of her descriptions of the elite students comes across like Gossip Girls with Vampires! I found it fun. I thought it was a little to neat that Schuyler's two best friends become major parts of the events but it was still well written. I really bonded with Schuyler and am curious to see what the future volumes bring. A quick , interesting read with a slight touch of horror. Thanks to the wonderful Book Chick City I won volumes one and 2 so I'm going to dive into the next book right away.
Here is the prize, a copy of Blue Bloods and some other goodies:

Remarkably, I haven't delved into the gobs of Vampire books available. I've read the Twilight books and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I wouldn't mind trying a new vampire read!
Thanks for the opportunity!
Cheers!
