12 Days Day 10: St. Distaff's Day

Welcome to Day 10 of  12 Days of X-mas. I'm really enjoying learning about all the traditions of Christmas's Past like the 10th day of X-Mas. This day was traditionally celebrated on January 4th.  It was called St. Distaff Day or more commonly Rock Day as this day signified the closing days oh Christmas celebrations and the return to labours.

Women in the pre-industrial world constantly spinning wool and flax into thread. They also had to produce all the cloth clothing for their families. This day added a bit of frivolity to their daily tasks and added a little bit of frivolity to the last few days of the winter holidays. Men would harry the women at work, and make false attempts to burn their flax or wool. In retaliation women would through buckets of water to putout their torches and if the male culprits got wet for their efforts the fun was increased.

Here is the text that describes this play from the Poet Robert Herrick:

Partly work and partly play
Ye must on St.Distaff's day:
From the plough soon free your team,
then come home and fother them.

If the maids a spinning go,
Burn the flax and fire the tow

Bring in pails of water, then

Let the maids bewash the men

What a fun ritual =)

Today I have an interview with a lovely  new to me, Blogger Cassandra of:

Cassay has the most beautiful blog header! We bonded on twitter over mutual love of Cassandra Clare and Chronicles of Vladamir Tod. She also made this interview easier by providing the great pics! Enjoy:

Do you like to read Holiday Themed Books? If so are their any books that you re-read every year?

I love reading Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

What are some of your favourite holiday traditions?

When we decorate the Christmas Tree (which usually takes a full day) we listen to Christmas Music (Rudolph, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and songs from the old school Burl Ives Christmas shows).

Every year we watch Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer both Burl Ives and the one with Whoopi as the Stormella (if your haven't seen this Rudolph you MUST).

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey version)

The Year Without a Santa Claus

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

I know you love books :) what other type of gifts do you like to get ?

I love getting Hallmark Christmas ornaments and DVD Series - I love my TV series and gift cards!

What book or books would you like to get as presents this year ?

This year I really really want Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick, Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. Those are the top ones that I really really want as I could go on forever.

  Thanks so much Cassandra :)
