1stAnnual Wear Star Wars/Share Star Wars Event

I have a comic blog that I write for but today I wanted to share this story with the Book blogging community as well. I know many of my fellow bloggers are Mothers and this story is a wonderful example of how the power of blogging and the Star Wars community helped this special girl:

It started with the Hashtag I saw on twitter #MayTheForceBeWithKatie

When I understood what was going on I immediately went to Katie's facebook page and left her a comment.

I have been a Star Wars fan for half of my life. In the summer of '77 as the end credits for Star Wars rolled across the screen my life was changed forever. That summer with my allowance and generous parents I owned and played with about every toy Kenner made! One of the sweetest things my mother ever did for me was clean out our walk in pantry and make it my Star Wars "room".  I would sit on the floor of that pantry for hours reading my Star Wars  books, playing with my x-wings and tie fighters. Usually in my star wars pajamas (boys! of course)
I was never teased for my passion, and never told it was "just for girls". Yet i clearly understand Katie's pain. I loved school. I was "that kid". the one that always had their. homework, whose papers were always read and praised in class, always in advance placement classes.  I never really fit in with my classmates, was always called "Brain" . This was hard for me because  I was growing up in a very dysfunctional home situation. School was the only permanent stable thing for many years. To be teased for something that gave me such peace was painful. Through the support of some wonderful teachers though I never gave up and learned to not hide my love of reading and learning.

The Ultimate and wonderful irony is how many friends I made at school because of Star Wars. I remember doing a report on Space and the Solar System. At the end of my booklet I had taped a bunch of my Star Wars cards and talked a little about why I loved Star Wars. At lunch that day several kids came up to me and wanted to see my cards and talk about Star Wars :)

In honor of Katie a wonderful event is going on today called
