PUBLISHER:

I was drawn to this book for very personal reasons. My mother was an alcoholic. I can say this now but as a young girl I really didn't know what was going on. My mother's moods were changeable, there were angry whispered fights between her and my father, many late nights wondering where she was and when and in what state of  she would return in , and finally when my sister moved out and my Mother left my father, it was just me, dealing with a situation I didn't know how to fix and was too ashamed to talk about.

So in these opening chapters of Natasha's book, when we see Sam on the staircase landing flipping the lights on and off to wake up her dad who has passed out in his food, I felt something break and release inside of me, and then of course tears.

Lush is such an important book. After completing the  book I'm baffled at how someone could find it offensive. Lush is a truthful, non-judgemental exploration of how one Parents addiction impacts an entire family.

I was Sam at 13. Filled with anger, fear, and incredibility at every ones decision to not look at the huge pink drunk elephant in the room.

Lush needs to thrive in the world for the millions of Samantha's who are living in similar situations. Though Sam finds the strength to ask for advice from a High School student in the book, many girls and boys don't know how or who to ask for help.  Lush could be a lifeline for teens and a pathway for reaching out for help.

Great review of what sounds to be a GREAT book. I don't think I've heard of it before but I'll be looking for it now. Powerful and important subject matter.

I always think it amazing when you happen across a book that you can relate to in such a way. To think that as a banned book you may have been denied the chance to read it is shameful.

The subject matter is really thought-provoking. That you could relate to the experience must have helped you connect and even if you can't relate, it's definitely an issue worth reading about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is actually the first time I've heard about the book but I get to put it on my radar now.

My favorite is also To Kill A Mockingbird. I am sorry you had to endure that as a child. But what a thought provoking subject. Being able to connect in such an emotional way might been be therapeutic. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It's on my TRL.

Thank you for sharing such a personal story. While these books often deal with uncomfortable subjects, that doesn't mean that they should banned.

Thanks for having the giveaway!

Great post, Kai. I'm feeling kind of tearful myself, thinking of what you had to go through. You really should go over and read my review of The Lurking Man by Keith Rommel at Castle Macabre. I think you should read it. I think you would appreciate it.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I've never heard of this book, but it sounds like something I would enjoy. It's sad that the most realistic books are often banned as if adults want to hide the fact the world isn't a perfect place.

I hadn't heard of this book before reading about it here. It sounds like a good one. I have watched a movie adaptation of Suzanne Sommers' Keeping Secrets where she wrote about growing up with an alcoholic father.

Instead of being banned, such books should be suggested reading. School guidance counselors and/or librarians should refer students to these books. The students may be able to identify with the protagonist and feel that they are not alone.
