MY GEEKY WEEK: Spotlight on Female Charaters & Creators

Happy Wednesday! For Comic book fans today is the best day of the week, its when new comics are released! I've had a stack of comics to get through this week and have three weeks worth waiting for me at my store! Today I want to spotlight some comics that have female leads and/or female creators. There is something for everyone to enjoy in the books I'm going to spotlight, so lets get to it!

WOMANTHOLOGY/ IDW have teamed up for this  five issue mini-series . The entire series is written and illustrated by female creators. I really enjoyed the variety of stories and the gorgeous artwork in this first issue.

DARKHORSE is one of my favorite companies. Not only do they have a variety of Star Wars comics (my number 1 geeky passion) but the also have a variety of kick ass female characters like Buffy, and the revamp of the fascinating character Ghost.

DC  Has been doing a lot of revamps of their characters. Some of them I haven't been too pleased with but I was really happy to see the return of Amethyst! It's been interesting re-reading Amethyst's previous adventures. It's amazing how you remember things a lot differently then they actually were :)

I really enjoyed the revamp of Amethyst, the creators have deftly moved Amy into the contemporary world. Their was one little misstep in the first issue that caused quite a stir online: an attempted rape scene that really didn't add anything to the story. Despite that this is a very solid comic that I think will have a lot of crossover appeal for teen girls who love fantasy.

ASPEN COMICS . I have to commend Aspen for having a tradition of strong female leads in their books. Executive Assistant's 4 was a great read but I struggled with some of the artwork. The character is strong and an a talented fighter but some of her artistic posing is "cheesecake" and distracted me from the great character and story. Definitely a book I would check back in with though.
