I swear sometimes it keeps me up at night, the thought that there are so many great books out in the world I wont get to read. Luckily this book came to me through one of my online friends Jessica Mills who is Deanie’s daughter. So through very little effort on my part I got a great read to devour, and a new (to me) author to discover.

This book was originally published in 1991, Deanie has recently made this book and a few others available as E-books.

First of I want to say that this book isn’t dated at all. It easily reads as a contemporary story. Deadline focuses on Tess Alexander a young writer whose star is on the rise due to a bestselling true crime novel. Tess’s notoriety is now on the cusp of getting even more notice when she is called by ex-governor Chandler who is accused of killing his wife and daughter and for the attempted murder of his Granddaughter. The case takes her back to her hometown of Texas and makes it impossible to ignore the relatives living there.

Tess takes the case and finds her self living amongst her semi estranged family members. As the case the Chandler trial moves towards a verdict Tess finds herself suffering from headaches and incidents of lost time. She thinks its due to the pressures of work and home. Then the threats begin, and the attacks. Soon it becomes clear that this case is becoming a threat to her work but her life.

I was really drawn into this story from the very beginning. I don't want to give too much away but Deanie really delivered a major plot twist that I didn't see coming at ALL! But was able to clearly see all the signs leading up to it in retrospect.

I love when an author is able to capture the reader in the narrative so much that we go where they lead instead of drawing our own conclusions. It made the reading so much more enjoyable.

This is a wonderful stand alone read that I highly recommend! Put on a pot of tea, grab a blanket and enjoy!
