The premise of the manga really intrigued me. In a futuristic Japan where an earthquake has left much of the country under water, A privatized prison provides entertainment and funds for government rebuilding projects.

That prison is Deadman Wonderland. Middle schooler Ganta Igarashi  is our guide into Wonderland. He is convicted of killing his entire middle grade class despite the lack of evidence (murder weapon) and his insistence that it was a “Red Man” who killed them all. The red Man also puts a strange crystal in Ganta’s chest.

After orientation Ganta learns that his “candy” has been stolen. This is a tablet that cures prisoners of the deadly poisons they are injected with daily through their collars. Desperate to live Ganta  enters one of Wonderlands many games to earn food and possibly winnings to keep himself alive.

The Anime for Deadman Wonderland aired a while ago and I only caught a few episodes of it so I was really happy that Viz started the manga releases.

The art in this volume is fabulous, the facial emotions on Ganta’s face really convey his terror and the madness of the prison .

One of my favorite characters in this series is Shiro. She is an albino female with flowing white hair and a childlike personality. She is excited to see Ganta even though he has no idea who she is. As this first issue unfolds it is apparent there is some deep link between them that is yet to be revealed. A wonderful start to a series that is quickly becoming my favorite.

I read this too, review still to come, and loved it! I don't watch anime so it's all new to me and I can't wait to find out what is so mysterious about Shiro! It was a great volume 1.
