Review: Jessica’s Guide To Dating on The Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

Confession Time. I’m so burned out with Vampires. It’s not really the Vampires fault. There has been a glut of Vampire books in the market over the past 5 to 10 years and I consumed a lot of them. I don’t feel that the genre itself is tapped out, but its really hard to find a unique twist in the YA vampire and Paranormal Romance Vampire series.
I had heard a lot of buzz about Beth’s books in the YA blogsphere, so a year ago when I discovered it was free on my nook I snapped it up. The story centers around Jessica Packwood, a typical small town teen looking forward to her senior year of High School. Jessica is adopted, but has a lot of love for her vegan, hippy like parents. Jessica’s life seems on track and she is finally making headway with her crush when Lucius shows up at her door. Lucius,with his exotic voice and imperious attitude and startling revelation: Jessica is a Vampire princess and Lucius is her betrothed, oh and Lucius is a Vampire as well, pretty much Vampire royalty.
I really loved how Jessica reacted to the news. It’s very realistic and had a nice sarcastic vibe to it. Lucius is very much a product of his Vampire Blue Blood culture. He complains a lot of the time about the food and his accommodations , what I did like about Lucius was his dedication to his betrothal to Jessica. He takes a lot of sarcastic abuse from Jessica in his attempts to woo her. Lucius works to find ways for them to connect while watching her complain about him to everyone in her life and crush on other boys. It’s pretty obvious midway through the book the book that Jessica and Lucius are going to be together. However Jessica's continuing bratty behavior, made “getting there” so much harder. I understand that dramatic tension and chemistry building takes time, but Lucius learns his lessons much faster then Jessica.
In fact Lucius is willing to cause a war between the undead communities by breaking the betrothal contract so Jessica can be free. Yet through out these changes Jessica still denies her feelings and tries to get her old life back.
I got so tired of Jessica’s attitude I actually peeked at the back to see how it would end! I enjoyed the ending despite it being a quick wrap up. I will also give book 2 in the series a try .
