Summer is full of rituals. For Children especially, those three months offer a freedom rarely found during their year of school and other obligations. For Rose summer means Awago beach, her parents summer home and the place where she connects with Windy, her summer sister.

As the girls reconnect with swims in the ocean, trips to the local hangouts and an exploration of horror movies, Rose also begins to notice the friction between her parents. Rose’s mothers moods are changeable  and her Father can’t seem to do anything right.

Add to this Rose’s burgeoning crush on a local teen and you have a summer full of changes some awkward and some necessary.

The issues between Rose’s parents aren't fully resolved in this story but I think that’s because the narrative of this book is seen through Rose’s eyes.

The art and pacing truly reflect this. Mariko really captures the feel of the environment and the energy of the girls. I loved Windy’s confidence and fun personality. Rose is a bit of a brooder but I could really connect with her emotions as she deals with her crush. A wonderful, atmospheric read perfect for middle grade and teen readers . A beautiful book.
