Review: Black Magic Volume 1 by Rucka & Scott

I received a complimentary download of this GN from Netgalley in exchange for a review.

I requested this book based solely because of the creators involved. Rucka is an amazing writer and is known for writing wonderfully complex female characters. Scott is a wonderful artist. She adds such a touch of realism to her art that really draws the reader into the story.

In this series we follow the life of  police officer Rowan Black. There are two facets to Rowan she is a cop and a witch, in this first series of stories however her two lives are merging in terrifying ways. It starts with a man holding hostages demanding Rowan come before him.

He shocks Rowan by knowing her true name, her status as a witch, and the means to destroy her. Rowan barely escapes before another body shows up with signs  that point to dark magic.

This first volume sets up the various relationships in Rowan's life and how the darkness stalking her can destroy them all.

I really enjoyed this first volume. I still have a lot of questions, but I'm enjoying watching the story unfold.
