Review: Lois Lane Fall Out by Gwenda Bond
The Internet was abuzz when Switch Press announced this Lois Lane Novel. For many fans of DC Comics the changes to Lois’s characters haven’t been that enjoyable in the last few years. So the thought of a novel showcasing all the things fans love about Lois was a literary lifeline.
First off I need to point out that you don’t know anything about DC comics or even Lois Lane to enjoy this novel.
Fall Out is like no other YA novel I’ve read before. It is a straight forward contemporary novel about an army brat settling down in Metropolis for the foreseeable future. Yet it also explores themes of bullying, gaming and the emotion side effects of virtual reality.
This time Lois swears to be different once she enters Metropolis High. She wants to fly below the radar, don’t make any waves. That lasts less then five minutes. While waiting for the principle in the school office Lois overhears a young girl complaining to him about The Warheads a school clique who has been targeting her inside a virtual landscape.
Lois is shocked to find Principle Butler brushing the young girl, Anavi off. The principle convinces Anavi to not file an official complaint despite Lois’s questioning of the situation. Her take charge attitude impresses a guest visiting Principal Butler : Perry White.
Quicker than you can say Exclusive, Lois has been hired to work on The Scoop a teen run supplement to the Daily Planet. Now Lois is on the trail of the Bullying tactics of The Warheads while also learning to trust her fellow reporters and potential friends.
I loved this book! Bond shows in this novel the qualities that make Lois more than the girlfriend of a certain Man of Steel. We do get a glimpse of the dynamic relationship of Lois and Clark through their online interactions. In Bond’s novel the pair are online friends and yet so much more. Lois struggles with the secrets Smallville Guy keeps from her and yet finds the intimacy building between them every day.
A very satisfying read with an action packed ending. I really hope bond gets the chance to share more of Lois’s world in future novels.
