Yogi Tips For Readathon

This Saturday is the Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon. I really enjoy this event, it's a great way to get some reading done and connect with fellow readers and Bloggers. For my time zone the event starts at 5 am. eep! So I make sure on the Friday before my fridge is well stocked, my reading pile is ready as well as update posts prepped and ready.

My yogic lifestyle also is really helpful so here are some tips to help make your readathon happy and healthy:

NIGHT BEFORE

Like an athlete before a big race the evening before activities are important:

Take a relaxing hot bath or shower

Limit stimulants and alcohol

Go to bed Early

READATHON DAY

Hydrate/Snack : Start with water and some tea, save coffee and soft drinks for the long haul. Also don't forget to eat! Start with a big breakfast and snack on lots of nuts and proteins for energy. Spread out the sugary sweets and treats for late afternoon and evening.

Breathe: The first few hours of the readathon are very hectic. There's excitement, hourly mini-challenges, Twitter and Facebook friends to chat with. Take deep breaths and remember you cant do everything! Decide whats more important and focus on that.
Connect: Readathon is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow book lovers. Take the time to search the #readathon hashtag, follow new people on Facebook and Twitter, it's a wonderful opportunity to talk about what you love and get traffic to your social networking sites.

STRETCH: Sitting for long periods of time can strain your back and neck. Here are some easy stretches:

DEAD HANG:

From a chair: place both palms on your thighs. gently slide them down your legs until you feel resistance in your back. Take some deep breaths, then gently slide forward again. If your back allows move forward until your hands are at your ankles. GENTLY! no forcing :)

V- STRETCH

Sit on the floor against a couch or wall. Gently open your leg until they form a V shape. The width of the V depends on your flexibility. Place both hands on the floor in front of you. Gently slide forward until you feel your back release, then gently move back to the start position.
TAKE A BREAK
This is the hardest for me. I really want to read as much as possible but taking a break is the best way to really enjoy the Readathon. Go outside, take a walk, or like me an early yoga class and a DVD signing in the afternoon. Even if you don't make your reading goals its more important to take care of your self and have fun!
Looking forward to chatting with all of you, and taking down some of my TBR pile. Find me here and @yogikai on Twitter

I definitely agree with you about taking a break! I often find that hard to do during the read-a-thon because there's so many interesting things going on.

All great points! Taking a break is a big one for me. I tend to get tired sitting in one place, so I try to break it up with a few chores mixed in. Doing chores certainly makes me more interested in getting back to my reading :)

Wonderful tips! I use audiobooks to entice myself to take breaks. I'll cook dinner or go for a walk with my iPod on, so I'm getting up out of my chair and giving my eyes a break while keeping the reading going :) Have a great Readathon!!
Thanks for the tips, Kai! I think you may be the read-a-thon guru. =O)
Awesome tips! I do have a hard time choosing what to do. I've been a cheerleader the past few Readathons, but I always end up cheering at all times (not just the hours I'm technically assigned to). I've found audio books are a great break for tired eyes or when you need to move around a bit and still feel productive!
