A new book by Gail Carriger! I was so excited to read this book and I have to say its a very promising start to a new series. First off I need to bring up Gail's previous  series the Parasol Protectorate : Soulless, Changeless etc. Though you don’t have to read this series to enjoy E & E  i highly recommend them. The reason I mention them is that Sophronia’s adventures take place in the same world as the protectorate series yet several years before.

In a very proper England Sophronia  does not fit in with the proper expectations of a Lady of her class and station. She reads way to much, experiments with dumb waiters. and climbs things!

Her mother doesn't know what to do with her until the meddling Mrs.Barnaclegoose suggests a finishing school. A very special school. Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

Yet the lessons at this school is a whole different kind of finishing! The girls study poisons and seductions fan play and physical ( yet ladylike) combat. Sophronia goes from disbelief to acclimation very quickly. Here her personality quirks are assets. In between lessons however Sophronia notices a very stressed set of teachers and support staff. Under the threat of numerous attacks due to a package that one of the students has failed to return, Sophronia finds clues to a mystery that might have its root at her own home.

I really enjoyed this book. Gail is wonderful at combining humor and action. I really enjoyed seeing the return of some of my beloved characters from Gail’s previous series as well as meeting some new characters. A wonderful start to the series!
