How I Became Hettie Jones by Hettie Jones

Love changes everything. For Hettie meeting her husband to be Roi not only brings her love but inspiration. Their love crosses barriers of race and religion yet to her he is Roi and to hem she is Hettie : “ race disappears in the house , in the bathroom, under the covers, in the bedbugs in your common mattress, in the morning sleep in your eyes” The two form a bucolic home in a neighborhood on the cusp of change and surrounded by a group of friends whose creativity will define a generation.

This is  an amazing read. Hettie has a wonderful way with words and she shares all of her experiences without blame of victimhood. It was amazing reading her snippets of poems and watching her thrive as a single mother. Her strength is immeasurable and her story resonates with the experiences of all of humankind. I came away from this book grateful for Hettie’s  decision to share her life and inspired to find the creative muses in my own life. A 5+ star read. Highly recommend it!
