TBR Pile Challenge Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
This is a wonderfully absorbing read set in 1485 Brittany. In a mere 11 pages Robin introduces us to the dark world of Ismae Rienne’s life. Ismae was born with the mark of Death. After her mother attempted to poison her in the womb, Ismae survived the poison though the marks left on her body show she has been claimed by the God of Death Mortain.
After escaping a brutal marriage Ismae is trained to be a tool for Mortain’s vengeance at the abbey of St . Mortain. Her skills include poisons, which she is extremely gifted at to seduction and knife training. After two successful missions Ismae is partnered with the Breton Noble Gavriel Duval in a mission involving Anne the Duchess of Brittany.
Ismae’s Court skills are lacking but her determination and stealth skills lead her to unravel a plot that might cost her life and the life of Gavriel.
I really loved watching Ismae grow as a character. Her powers as an agent of Mortain are fascinating especially as she learns to use them in ways that have never been taught at the Abbey. She also navigates the emotional landscapes of her heart as her feelings for Gavriel begin to change.
A very solid read. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
