Sci-Fi Month Review : Descender Volume 1 by Lemire & Nguyen

I received a complimentary download of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a review.

Man's inhumanity to man is a theme often explored in Science Fiction. Descender however focuses on the equally complicated subject of mankinds connection to technology.

As I set here writing this on my tablet, and listening to a podcast on my phone I realize how integral technology has become to all of our daily lives. However when something goes wrong with an upgrade or a hack happens users ar immediately up in arms.

In the world of Descender technology has advanced to the point where helper robots are a part of every facet of life. Then one day a massive Robot army comes and destroys a large part of Earth. The humans that remain instantly turn on all robots destroying many.

Ten years pass and we are introduced to TIM-21 a companion android who wakes to find his human mother dead and his brother missing.

Tim-21 also discovers that the machinery in his brain is similiar that of the Harvesters who attacked many years ago.

The foundation of this world is established pretty quickly but  i felt the story drifted away after that. The art is expressive and captures the feel of outer space and alien cultures. TIM-21 is  on the run from several factions, which makes up the bulk of the action for this first trade.

There is a lot of potential in this series but not much really goes on in these initial issues. The story elements are intriguing and definitely worth sticking around for.
