THE ARC'S (AND NON ARC'S) OF MARCH part 2 Giveaway!!

Child of Fire (Twenty Palaces, #1) Child of Fire by Harry Connolly

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Child of Fire is the first book in Twenty Palaces series by debut author Harry Connolly. This is another great ARC I got at San Diego comic-con last July.I actually got to meet Harry as well which was lots of fun. Now on to the review:

"Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He's a driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society..But because Ray betrayed her once,Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him... or let someone else do the job" cover blurb.

One of the many things I loved about this book was the male protagonist Ray. Ray is such a well realised character and the book is told in his "voice" Not since Harry Dresden have I enjoyed a leading male character.

This book hits the ground running!!. Ray and Annalise are on the road moving towards an unspecified job. Ordered to pull over at rest stop, Ray watches a young boy hop out of a car. He tells his parents that he isn't feling well and instantly bursts into flames. Ray rushes to help the boy but it is to late. He is shocked to see the parents show no reaction and when questioned they angrily reply that they don't have a son. They also blame ray for the "burn" damage to their car!

The parents and the town that they come from is under a horrible spell that is taking the lives of the towns children and erasing all memory of their existence.

This book is well written and action packed. It deftly mixes action with magic and horror. Ray is especially vulnerable since his past actions have left him dependant on Annalise's good will and magical skills. When she is injured he must depend on his wits and his one small piece of reamaining magic his "Ghost Knife". Annalise is an interesting character she is strong and angry but also strangely vulnerable. This book kept me guessing and Highly entertained I was thrilled to discover there are more forthcoming. This book was released in September of '09 and might have missed your notice. I highly suggest you pick it up now!
