REVIEW: MY SOUL TO KEEP

My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers, #3)My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

WHEN KAYLEE CAVANAUGH SCREAMS, SOMEONE DIES

AND KAYLEE IS ABOUT TO SCREAM HER HEAD OFF...

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon’s breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow, the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And when the epidemic hits too close to home, Kaylee will have to risk everything to save those she loves Good Reads

This is the third volume in Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamer Series. This is my favorite in the series so far! Rachel has a firm grasp of Kaylee's world and has deftly introduced more of the Netherworld into every book.

In this story Kaylee is dealing with the effects of a deadly new drug called Frost. Two of her boyfriend Nash's teammates have been using this dangerous breath from a Netherworld Hellion.

While trying to figure out how the Frost is being transported to her friends, Kaylee also has to figure out why she is transporting herself to the Netherworld in her sleep. In the past she has had Nash to rely on but this time he is strangely hesitant. The action in this book is very well paced. I found it hard to put down as all the pieces in the story played themselves out.

Kaylee shows incredible strength in this volume. She is faced with many physical and emotional challenges. Rachel has many surprising plot twists in this book, especially with Tod and Nash. I don't want to spoil anything but the events in this book cause a major shakeup in Kaylee's relationships. Rachel is a master at plot twists I never saw coming!

I was also impressed with the strong albeit subtle messages Rachel has in this Novel. There are several scenes with Kaylee and Emma that are very positive examples for Young adults. Kaylee is very observant of Emma. Whether it be taking her keys due to Emma's choice to drink, or Kaylee protecting a buzzed Emma for leaving with an intoxicated boy.

Even the scenes with the drug frost bring up a lot of great examples about drugs and addiction. These scenes are not overly preachy, nor do they detract from the overall plot of the novel.

The final chapters in this Novel are action packed and emotionally poignant. Kaylee has to make a difficult choice regarding Nash in the wake of startling revelations about his actions and character.

I'm very excited to see where the Series goes next, this book is a turning point in terms of Kaylee's character growth and the possibilities in future Novels.
