I killed a demon. I don’t know if it was really, technically a demon, but I do know that he was some kind of monster, with fangs and claws and the whole bit, and he killed a lot of people. So I killed him. I think it was the right thing to do. At least the killing stopped.

I was really excited to get this book from TOR/Forge books!! I read "I'm Not A Serial Killer" and was excited when I heard there was a sequel.

From the cover design to the poem before the prologue I felt myself sliding into John's world immediately:

Dan's inclusion of this poem is the heart of who John Cleaver is and a dark foreshadowing of who he may become. Again the narration of this novel is in John's voice. You are inside his head. A trapped albeit willing observer of what he sees and feels.


From chapter one John is already breaking one of the rules he uses to keep himself in check. He is contemplating a cat that is keeping him from his desire to bun a pile of trash. His need is strong, his urges compelling him for release. Since he defeated the Clayton Killer several months ago John has opened a door that cannot be fully closed again.


The fire helps. To an extent. Reading this book is a voyeurism of the creepiest kind. I rooted for John. Cringed through his increasingly dark fantasies of his classmate Brooke, experienced joy that his odd behaviors resonated with her as an amusing eccentricity. The two of them even manage to have a successful date.

In the midst of John struggling to make healthy connections, a series of bodies began to be discovered.

John finds himself repeatedly questioned by FBI Agent Forman who is still trying to find the original Clayton Killer. He questions John's story of the events that night. Forman's suspicion of John increases when he gains access to John's therapy records.

The new string of murders and the possibility of a second Demon deliberately leaving them in places familiar to John excite and terrify him. He continuously stops by Forman's office exposing himself to discovery in order to get information on the victims.
When the murderer is revealed he involves John in a nightmarish series of events that awaken Mr. Monster fully and bring Brooke to him with an opportunity to fulfil his darkest desires.
The last half of this book is the scariest thing I've read in a loong time. I had no idea how Dan would end this. The introduction of a second Demon in this contemporary setting fits quite well. We also learn a little bit more about the Demon community in general.

John's shocking decision at the end of this novel set the stage for a an exciting future novel. My heart broke for John in this book. His struggle to fight against his darkest desires but also protect his town, family and even Brooke leave him vulnerable to a lifetime of darkness.
