WELCOME TO A CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN
31 DAYS !! I really love HALLOWEEN and now that I have a blog I'm excited to share my passion with you this month :) Welcome to Week One:Ghost's , Faeries, and Gargoyles Oh My! GHOSTS
I have too admit, with the exception of a few campfire stories and childhood Halloween books I haven't really read or watched a lot of material with ghosts in it. Until recently ;) Now I have three major passions from three different genres that all feature GHOSTS in them! TVbeing human
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when creator Toby Whithouse pitched this show to BBC: so this Vampire, Werewolf and Ghost are living in an apartment together... If you aren't watching this show RUN to your local video store and get it Season 2 has just aired. More on the gorgeous guys later, today the spotlight is on Annie played by Lenora Crichlow:
Annie is the heart of the series. She is the first of the cast we meet. Annie is living in a flat with her fiancee when she takes a tumble (allegedly) and dies. Her soul remains and she lives a desolate existence watching new families move in and out of the flat, She is unnoticed and sad. Until vampire John Mitchell and Werewolf George Sands move in. Not only can they see her they can also hear her. The three of them form a strange family and there presence adds more substance to Annie's life literally and figuratively. Annie goes through a lot of changes the first season, (except for clothes! the poor girl wears the same outfit every episode!) she begins to become visible to others in addition toher roommates, she even ventures outside the flat. Annie's new found happiness is threatened by THE DOOR and the men with sticks and ropes are after her, they are not pleased she has yet to pass on to the afterlife and they make repeated attempts to force her to the afterlife. Lenora is a wonderful actress, she has a great chemistry with the rest of the cast. I love the little touches Toby adds to her character: her obsessive making of tea that she can't drink, her habit of "poping" in on the boys at the most inopportune of times like the bedroom or the shower ;) OOOH!Thoseboys are yummy, more on them later promise! MANGA
YOUR BODY IS THEIR BUSINESS
In the last 10 to 15 years American readers have really embraced manga. Especially young women and teenage boys. What I love most about manga is the variety of topics and genres it encompasses. Like Rance? there's a manga for it. Fantasy? there's a manga for it . Horror? there is no manga better than The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, translated and distributed by Dark Horse Comics. The Corpse Delivery Service is a group of struggling college students using their psychic gifts to make a living. A Psychic, Dowser (one who uses a pendulum), a corpse expert/embalmer and a channeler who uses a creepy puppet to communicate with a sarcastic, eerily correct space being(no really!) This series is up to eleven volumes. Every issue they search for corpses. Karatsu the psychic has the ability to reanimate the body and speak to it's spirit. If the body wants to be delivered to a location the Kurosagi will transport them in return for a piece of jewelry, money or any other type of commerce. If the client has no monetary value they will divulge the info on the killer to a police for a reward. This is a wonderful creepy series. full of ghosts, haunting and other terrors. What I enjoy most about Kurosagi is its contemporary Japanese setting. I have a great appreciation for Japanese imports : Manga, Anime, strange snack foods ;) You really get a sense of Japanese society, their culture and their superstitions. I really enjoy this series, don't let the number of volumes dissuade you . You can pick up any issue and follow along but I really recommend you start with issue one. The art and writing mesh very well together. The black and white drawings by housui yamazaki are very detailed and add a great sense of reality to eiji otsuka's writing.
BOOKS
If you've read my blog or Goodreads recently you know how much I love these books by Stacia Kane. She is a unique thrilling voice in the Speculative fiction field. The books are set in a society recovering from the return of millions of angry homicidal ghosts. Those left alive owe their lives and their finical support to the Church of Truth who guarantees their safety. In return if they are ever subjected to a haunting the church will banish the ghost and pay them $50,000. I've never enjoyed or been spooked more by ghosts! A great series. Now for my first contest, in celebration of the 31 days event! Win a book of your choice, hopefully something spooky ;) from:
