Review: A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix

Garth Nix is one of those authors I always have the best intentions towards. “Some day” I would tell my self I’m going to read one (or all) of his books ! Thanks to an abundance of gift cards this holiday season I finally bought one!
“Confusion” is a wonderful blend of Science Fiction, Action an exploration of humanity. Prince Khemri has very few memories of his family. As a young boy he was selected as a Prince candidate. Princes spend years being groomed for this special honor. They spend years in stasis being educated and genetically modified for the chance to rule. When a Prince comes of age he has precious little time at his temple of education before he has a literal target on him.
To lessen the odds of succession millions of Princes engage in a chess like game of manipulation and assassination. Khemri is no exception to this rule but since his debut Khemri has felt different. He feels special. There seems to be a powerful guardian attached to Khemri. He is given direction to work situations that benefit his promotion and has a larger contingent of priests and a master assassin.
Like intergalactic breadcrumbs, Khemri follows a path that peals away all the secret layers of the galaxy and his expected place in it.Khemri is a great character! I He really experiences a hero’s journey. it was wonderful watching him grow and make courageous choices.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick enjoyable read yet it also had some deeper thoughts about the nature of predestination and the strength to break free from expectations. I’m looking forward to reading more from Nix.
