I received a complimentary download of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a review.

This book is everything I love about comics. Gorgeous art, great characters, and plenty of action. This collection contains Night Shift a short story that sets the scene for the four issue mini-series. It’s January, 1941 and Dr.Antonia Howard is working late cataloging a recent exhibit the Natural History Museum has recently received. She is examining a lizard shaped object when the lights darken and three armed men burst in. Thankfully The Black Beetle also has an interest in the amulet and manages to rescue the amulet and foil the Nazis.
The next part of the book reprints issues 1-4 of the mini-series titled “No Way Out”. The story opens with The Beetle scouting a meet location of two Italian mobsters. Before he can take them out the bar where they are meeting explodes. While tracing the trail of the bomber Beetle discovers that one of the victims is very much alive. Beetle is also tailed by the mysterious Labyrinto, who is leaving a trail of bodies for his own personal gain.
This is such a great read! Not to diminish the writing, but Francesco’s art is the star of this series. The art draws you into the Beetle’s world and never lets go! It is atmospheric and almost Gothic at times with a touch of Steampunk. I’m counting the days until the Beetles next adventures are released.
