My reading focus for this year is very series focused. I want 2014 to be the year that I catch up on my current series reads and the year that I start new series like The Wheel of Time. So after reading & reviewing volume three of this graphic novel adaption I was pleased to be offered volume four.
While volume three of this series was somewhat new reader friendly this volume picks up immediately where the last volume ended. After a battle the traveling companions are split into three groups not knowing about the fate of the others yet all deciding to head towards the city of Caemlyn.
The separation really allowed for some deeper character development and I learned a lot about the events that came before volume three.
My favorite group was Perrin, Egwene and Elyas. The trio start at a slower pace than the rest but the time with Elyas is an opportunity for the group to rest and in Egwene’s case a time for some social connections. Perrin however is still haunted by dark dreams and continues to be pursued by dark forces. The art in this series is phenomenal but it really adds to the action scenes with the trio and the wolf and crow battles.
The trio become a duo as Perrin & Egwene are separated from Elyas and come under the care of Geofram Bornhald who suspects them of being in alliance with the Dark.
Mat and Rand’s journey takes up the bulk of this volume. The two of them are on foot with little money and only the offer of hard labor and entertainment gets them food and shelter. The pair continue this routine across a string of Inns until they reach The Four Kings. Here Rand is noticed as marked by the Dark and the innkeeper locks him up. Rand is forced to use his powers and the two barely escape. Their bad luck continues as more encounters with Dark friends occur until they are able to hitch a ride to Caemyln.
This volume really moved the story forward and I’m looking forward to getting started with the novels.
