This book had me at zombie. I love the many ways that zombie fiction has entered the reading various reading genres. This middle grade book is a nice little read that is more about friendship and adventure, vs thrills and chills. Matt Hunter and his friends lead a pretty normal life despite the borders of their town being infested by the walking dead!
The town has zombie traps that zap the undead like flies and a power hungry mayor who does tons of zombie checks. The townspeople even have special chips in their wrists that inform the government when they die. Like a pretty normal kid Matt is also looking forward to Christmas and has dreams of a special video game item. Instead he gets a hamster. A hamster that dies a few days later and comes back as a rabid infectious zombie.
Now Matt and his friends are on the hunt to catch the rabid hamster and hide the fact that one of their best friends has been infected. This is a short yet sweet read that is great for all ages but will do well as a family read along or a goal for an independent reader.
This is my 3rd book for the Coyer Summer Challenge
