Review: Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix
Part parody, Part thriller, Hendrix does a great job scaring readers of this book. A the heart of any successful parody is the knowledge and possibly respect for your subject. So readers who have visited an IKEA before will find humor in everything from the look of the book to the names of products that have a definite tip of the hat to the IKEA lifestyle.
Our guides through this story are Amy and Basil two Orsk employees who couldn't be more different. Amy’s life is in a financial and emotional rut. She is trying to keep her head down while a transfer comes through to another store. Basil is a responsible single dad who encompasses all the positive qualities of Orsk management.
While Amy thinks he is out to get her, Basil is just asking that she she be a responsible worker, which includes showing up to work on time and taking pride in her work.
Basil gives Amy a chance to redeem herself and make some extra money by working a secret night shift in the store. There have been various vandalisms to the store that need to be explained.
Their investigations lead to the discovery of a underground world called the beehive. This is a torturous place that holds the answer to all the missing employees and vandalism.
This book goes from humor to creepy really fast. The grim torture devices that grace some chapter headings also add to the overall creepiness. A very solid read with a nice ending.
