HallowReads Review: Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Issue 1 by Aguirre-Sacasa & Hack
Archie Comics
Archie comics has done a wonderful job of exploring the boundaries of their well beloved characters. Beginning with the Archie Marries Veronica and Archie Marries Betty as well as the Horror smash Afterlife With Archie where Sabrina tries to bring Jughead’s pet Hot Dog back to life, yet instead sets off the Zombie Apocalypse in Riverdale.
After Sabrina’s brief appearance in issue one of Afterlife, she pops up again in issue six where we learn where she has been banished too and now in issue one of her own series.
The creative team on this book go back, way back for Sabrina’s origin, way back to the 1950’s. In the opening pages we learn the bittersweet tale of Sabrina’s parents Edward and Diana and how she ended up in the custody of Zelda and Hilda. Sabrina is aware she is different as her powers manifest quite strongly at an early age. Though the three women live quietly, they are connected to a local coven. Even amongst her own kind Sabrina is an odd fit. she is labeled a “half-breed” by her classmates, and dark rumors surround her parents, including one that says her warlock Father murdered her human Mther.
I really love the take Roberto is taking with the story. All of the elements fan know from Sabrina are present in the story: Harvey, Salem and even cousin Ambrose. Yet the story has a classic horror feel to them that horror fans will love.
Hack and Morelli are doing a stellar job with the art. There is a wonderful soft focus touch to all the art. The environment fully reflects the look of the 50’s and 60’s but their is a hint in the horrors to come beneath any panel.
I’m so excited to see where this series is going! Check it out!
