12 Days Holiday Comics : Grandville Noel by Bryan Talbot
I don’t know how I missed the earlier volumes of this series but I will be snapping them up soon. Talbot is an amazing Artist and Writer. The Grandville stories revolve around Detective Inspector Le Brock of Scotland Yard. Le Brock is a Badger, in fact all of the main characters in this series are talking animals! There are also humans, aka doughfaces, in this world but they are considered second class life forms. The series takes place in Victorian times and it has a wonderful gothic feel to it.
As the yuletide season is about to begin LeBrock is drawn into a missing persons case involving his housekeeper’s niece Bunty Spall. Bunty has run off to join the church of a charismatic young messiah who is also the rarest of creatures: A unicorn.
The Messiah is leaving a trail of bodies in his wake as he searches for the chosen few worthy of his quest. LeBrock however discovers some dark secrets about the ministry that has ties to a retired freak show.
This book is a delight! It is gorgeously illustrated and has a stellar story. I was really intrigued by the different animals especially Le Brock’s partner Ratzi.
This is a standalone tale but really leads the reader to seeking out more stories set in the same universe.
Overall Review:
