Review: Jellaby Volume 1 & 2 by Kean Soo
When I read March Grand Prix I was looking for more reads by Kean Soo and I discovered these adorable books. This story is about a young girl named Portia who is adjusting to her new life in a new town with her mother. Portia has a hard time making friends and she spends many nights wondering about the whereabouts of her father.
One night after waking from a bad dream, Portia sneaks outside to investigate a strange noise and discovers a strange Purple creature. The creature seems lost so Portia takes him home. Thus begins a secret friendship. When a young boy from school discovers her secret the three of them form a friendship and name their new friend Jellaby.
This is such an emotionally powerful read. There is tons of cuteness but Kean also covers serious topics like bullying and isolation.
Volume 2 of this series shows the trio on a road trip on Halloween. Jellaby has recognized a door that was photographed in the local newspaper. The trio board a train and after some unexpected occurrences make it to the city. There is a definite tonal shift in this volume as secrets are revealed, but it is still has elements of cuteness and a satisfying conclusion. Check these wonderful books out!
