A Fortnight of Finn & Rey Day 2 : Finn IS A Big Deal
The teaser trailer for The Force Awakens set the tone for the trilogy to come. It was a tone of misdirection in many cases but also of revelations. This first cast member shown was John Boyega and it was a really big deal.
This shot showed that Finn was not a side character. He was something new. What he was would be the cause of speculation up until the films release.
My speculation ran really high when promotional photos were released with FInn holding a lightsaber :
Could Finn be a Jedi? What did Jedi even mean in this new era of Star Wars? Finn handled the saber as best he could with out any training and it's important to remember he held his own for a few moments against a much better trained force user. The precious minutes he held of Kylo Ren allowed Rey to regroup her strength and fight her own battle.
It's hard to talk of Finn without mentioning Rey because once Finn faces the connection he feels with her there is no turning back for him.
Their connection is based in such a mutual instinctual caring that when Finn mentions in TROS that he believes the force brought them together it was a revelation to me. It explains so much of Finn's desire to know where Rey is, to be the link that brings her back to herself and her found family.
I confess to struggling with some of the choices made in Finn's arc. But his heart and Boyega's acting elevate the material given, along with the natural chemistry of Daisy & John . What I love most about Finn is that his affection doesn't TAKE or WANT. He wants Rey safe to make the decisions SHE wants. He feels her struggle with Kylo but never tells her what she needs to do. Instead he is by her side and also available for hugs. I live for their hugs !!
Finn begins his journey in TROS stronger older and more present than ever before. Boyega's influence in the look and arc of Finn in this final film is evident. Though the ball is dropped in a few places(more on that in the days to come), Finn is an active member of the trio and his connection to Rey burns brighter as she faces her toughest battle.
